Matco MIG welder quality question?
I am looking at getting a welder. Im new to the game of welding. I like TIG, but my common sense tells me MIG will be easier for me to learn with. Im weary of buying cheap quality electrical items, Harbor freight reeks of poor quality but they had some with really good reviews on MIG 140 amp for $300 and TIG 165 amp for $400(both are chicago electric). I found a Matco 140amp MIG at the pawn shop..it is of the newer style. They have it listed for $400...retail is around $1200 new. My question is, is how risky is buying a used welder? I know Matco is quality but anything used can be a little risky. What should I look for?
Any comments on my situation would be helpful, Thanks
The $1200 retail price is one I got from the matcotools.com website.....they still sell welders.
Thank you for the response though. Could you suggest a welder that a beginner could buy, im not looking for a professional welder...but then again I dont want something doesnt work every well either.

EDIT: Chris, thanks for correcting me. I looked on the Matco website again and found them. I still think they look very dodgy and are no doubt made in china, or mexico. Not the kind of equipment a professional would use.
If you want to make decent welds, then consider an old-school stick welder. Stick welding has been around for more than 80 years, it's very simple and straightforward.
I always reccomend STICKwelding for amateurs because the equipment is very low cost, simple to use, reliable, and it offers much better weld quality and more versatility than you will get from underpowered bargain MIG welders. You don't have to worry about a shield gas, you don't have to worry about your wire getting jammed or you lead getting clogged. You don't have to worry about getting your feed speed and voltage just right. Everything is all right there in front of you. The only major drawback is that you can't stick weld thinner than about 12 ga or 1/16" material, but I don't see that being an issue for a hobbyist. Stick welding is aslo a very good way to hone your basic skills. If you can make a good-looking stick weld, it's not too hard to learn to use other processes.
Miller, Hobart, and Lincoln all have an excellent line of low-cost, basic stick welders. which you can buy for around $500-$700
