I have type A+ blood and would like to donate plasma. My sister is O+ and the phlebotomist told her that they would prefer she did not donate plasma because of her blood type. I tried doing some research about why this might be but did not find anything helpful. So is it true that certain blood types are not good/compatible with plasma donation?

All volunteer donations are needed. However, blood centers occasionally ask donors of certain blood types to give specific blood components, based on the needs of the community. Type A donors comprise approximately 40-43% of the U.S. population, while Rh positive is found in 85%. As a result, most blood donors are type A and these components (red cells, platelets or plasma) are rarely in short supply. Your red cells may be transfused to types A+ and AB+ recipients while your plasma may be used in Type A or O recipients. Your sister, as a Type O+, may provide red cells to any Rh+ recipient, but only provide plasma to another Type O. Type O red cells, especially O negative, may be used in emergency situations, neonatal transfusions or if type specific red cells are not available. As a result, O red cells are in short supply and always needed.
All collection facilities will allow donors to choose the type of donation they wish to give. If your sister would like to give plasma, they will be happy to honor her wishes.
