Frequently Asked Questions...
I need a sewing machine that will sew heavy duty thread through 3 layers of strapping that total 1/4" thick.?
I need a heavy duty or industrial grade/commercial grade sewing machine to sew through 3 layers of canvass strapping totaling about 1/4". It must be able to zig zag to sew what is referred to as a bar tack on military helmet chin straps. I know nothing about sewing machines so please guide me to a couple of good quality brands and model numbers of older machines that I can get at a lower cost since I'm on a tight budget.
Answer:
Send samples to be sewn to various used industrial machine companies and have them sew you some bartacks with your materials. Buy what looks best.
I think you're looking for a machine that does a 304 stitch.

Most older industrials cannot be switched between stitches like a home machine.

Watch the power needs, and 110 vs 200.
Here are a couple of starters -- don't know much about them except they're near me.

Different sort of sewing machines at a glance
A Sewing machine is the best tool ever invented for the women. Sewing machines are of three types. 1. Manual Sewing machines, 2.Electric Sewing machines.3. Computerized Sewing machine.
A Manual sewing machine is of manual control. The user can stitch the cloth, by moving the wheel. The wheel has a handle. This type of machine is easily controllable and does not need electricity. However, the machine speed is slower. If you are an amateur user, then the machine is a suitable one for you. The manual machine is also cost-effective, as it does not need electricity. You can add a foot paddle and place it on a table. The foot paddle increases the work speed. The foot paddled machine, could be found in the tailor shops. These are ideal for small businesses. The second type is the Electrical machine. These types of machines are of, both industrial and household. The industrial machines are of large size and they are fast in speed, ideal for massive cloth production and work load. You can find these machines in the garments manufacturing plants. But those are mostly old technologies. Medium scale industries use those machines. The smaller electrical machines are found, in the tailor shops and small-clothes businesses. Some household users also use these machines. Some machines are both manual and electrical. They have both the options.
The computerized sewing machines are state of the art technology. Both industrial and household users use them. We use the small ones, for household works. This type of machine has computerized programs, loaded in their memory chip. The user can choose any function for the different types of stitching works. This makes the machine, work automatically. The user only controls the cloth, beneath the needle. These small computerized machines have become popular then the manual ones and are replacing the old technology. Anyhow, the appeal for the old machines hasn't finished yet. Some of these sewing machines have made small, can fit in the lap o even palm. These are good for those, who do not need a machine all the time, only stitch clothes for repairing. So, repairing clothes is easy with these machines, especially for those people, who do not know how to stitch clothes. They can buy a small palmtop sewing machine for small usage.
Automated clothes production in a large-scale, is done by large computerized sewing machines. Those machines are for large-scale production and heavy work load. Some of these machines are centrally controlled. There are various types of giant computerized sewing machines and they are for various purpose.
