How much for welding lessons?

A guy is going to come out and show my son how to weld/make stuff with a small 115 V wire feed Mig welder we just bought. I found him on CL and he has lots of experience, now he's in Engineering school and is trying to make some money part-time. He is going to give my son ideas on what other good tools to buy, etc. also, depending on what he wants to make and do with it.

I figure I'd like him to come out for a couple hours or so. He didn't put how much he wants, he just started advertising. What would be a fair price to pay him?

Answer:

An average welding shop charges $80/hr.

Since he's going to be using your machine and not building anything per say, only instructing, I would think that $40/hr should be a good rate.

I don't know his qualifications, but a good welder can make over $100. It is fairly common depending on skills and what is being built.
