The Lathe Machine And Its Parts
The lathe machine has five different components – the headstock; tailstock; cutting tools, such as the gouge, skew chisel, round chisel, narrower spear and the finishing utensils; carriage and spindle.
Lathe equipment is utilized in order to smooth wood surfaces and create shapes. Lathe machinists and craftsmen find these kinds of machines useful in customization and wood work. Cylindrically shaped wood items such as baseball bats, cue sticks, chair and table legs, and other parts of wood furniture are created using a lathe. Lathes are also used to carve wood surfaces and provide design elements. If you work with glass or metal, you can get lathes for those jobs too. If you want to operate a lathe properly and be aware of when the spindle is in need of repair and how to maintain the machinery, it is important to be familiar with all the different parts.
Headstock
The headstock of the lathe machine is used to anchor and hold the upper end of the spindle in place. It also houses the motor that rotates the wood. Remember that thanks to the fact that the back of the headstock has a number of pulleys and gears, you can easily alter the speed of the spindles’ rotation. A high-tension spring or chuck keeps the wood piece steady and in place so that it does not fall or move when the spindle starts rotating.
The Tailstock?
A lathe machine is a centered mechanism that is attached to the piece of wood, and that is held in place by a tailstock. The center can rotate along with the wood or can remain fixed in place. The rotating mechanism, or live center, has the bearings that make movement possible.
The skew chisel, narrow spear, round chisel, gouge and other cutting and finishing tools
You can attach several types of cutting tools on the lathe machine depending on the type of project being undertaken. The gouge tool is the most common tool used for clearing out excess wood. The skew chisel is used for refining the carving details. Finer details are made using round chisels and narrower spears. Finishing tools are best for buffing the wood because their rounded-off ends prevent them from slicing any more material than needed.
Carriage Component
The lathe’s cutting tool is held in place by the carriage which allows the craftsman to work. The carriage consists of five different components, which include the compound rest, cross-slide, apron, tool rest and saddle. The parts work with each other to help guide the cutting tool into the correct position.
The spindle
There are three different types of lathe spindles. The main configurations consist of the threaded, cam-lock and the tapered. The threaded model is the least recent configuration and it isn’t tapered, making the chuck pretty hard to attach. Cam-lock spindles slides into a ring of similar holes and contain cam studs on one end. The studs lock in place when a chuck key is turned. The tapered spindle is narrow at the tip, the third configuration with a threaded collar and a built-in chuck key.
With the advent of the lathe machine, craftsmen find it far easier, faster and less physically taxing to create and complete wood projects of any kind. Craftsmen are able to work accurately because they use lathe machines.
