Why does my oil pressure gauge stay at zero when my car is cold?
I have a 99 Ford Explorer and when I go to start my car in the morning the check gage light goes on and my oil pressure gage stays at 0. After the car has been running it jumps up to normal and stays there. It only happens when my car is cold when I first start it.
Answer:
Typically one will get a higher oil pressure reading when the engine oil is still cold.
As oil heats up it thins out, flowing much better ..................Like Crisco cooking grease.
Once the engine heats up you usually see a 10 -15 lb. drop in pressure
The two numbers on your oil tell you of there viscosity change in weights.
Example 5W40 , The oil starts out cold in a 40 weight , and thins out to a 5 weight after being heated.
Oil changes viscosity @ 180 - 240 Degrees
Conventional oils leave deposits that sludge up the inside of your engine block , especially when the oil is not changed in a timely manor .
These deposits can clog up various internal passages , like your oil pressure sending unit .
Oil pressure sending units are usually inexpensive and easy to replace.
(if they are reachable with out lifting the car)
It would also be a good idea to switch to a synthetic oil to naturally wash the old conventional oil sludge out.
Synthetic oils do not leave deposits , they beak the deposits apart molecularly .
They cost more then conventional cheap oil , but this is what Castrol Syntech oil's label means by "Unlock the power"
