Milling Cutters
Milling cutters are tools used for cutting in milling machines or machining centers. Their main function is to remove the material from the machine by their movement within the machine. They come in different forms and sizes. These special Milling machines can carry out a huge number of functions, from easy and uncomplicated like slot and keyway cutting, planning, drilling etc. The designing and production of the Milling cutters requires much focused knowledge as the manufacturing of such cutters is based on technical standards. Milling cuttrer is a fluted, sharp-edged rotary cutter for dressing surfaces, as of metal, of various shapes.
There are various features of a milling cutter which enhance its usage. The flutes of the milling bit are the deep helical grooves running up the cutter, while the sharp blade along the edge of the flute is known as the tooth. The tooth cuts the material, and chips of this material are pulled up the flute by the rotation of the cutter. Typically, the more teeth a cutter has, the more rapidly it can remove material. The flutes of a milling cutter are almost always helical(Helix angle). If the flutes were straight, the whole tooth would impact the material at once, causing vibration and reducing accuracy and surface quality. Typically, finishing cutters have a higher rake angle (tighter helix) to give a better finish. The right tool coatings can have a great influence on the cutting process by increasing cutting speed and tool life, and improving the surface finish. The shank is the cylindrical part of the tool which is used to hold and locate it in the tool holder.
The various kinds of milling cutters are available some of them are discussed. End mill are those tools which have cutting teeth at one end, as well as on the sides. They are the most common tool used in a vertical mill. Slot drill are generally two fluted cutters that are designed to drill straight down into the material. This is possible because there is at least one tooth at the centre of the end face. Slot drills are used only when it is impractical to use an end mill such as blind slots and pockets. Hollow mill they are shaped like a piece of pipe (but with thicker walls), with their cutting edges on the inside surface. Ball nose cutters are similar to slot drills, but the end of the cutters are hemispherical. The side-and-face cutter is designed with cutting teeth on its side as well as its circumference. They are made in varying diameters and widths depending on the application.
