Frequently Asked Questions...
why do carbide end mills run undersize?
Answer:
Carbide end mills are typically used with high speeds and heavy feed rates that generate extreme temperatures both in the tool and the material being worked. A full sized tool would result in an over-sized cut due to thermal expansion of both the tool and the work piece. Mills are available which are true sized but you have to be specific when you order them, most user's are aware of the size allowance and if you give them a true sized tool they could easily ruin one or more work pieces before they realize what is going on.
