Shoul a catalytic converter fail after 2 years? What are my rights?
I bought a brand new catalytic converter which was fitted by a garage 2 years ago. I had to have this fitted because my car (Peugeot 206 GTI W-Reg) failed it's MOT on emissions. When the cat was fitted it passed with flying colours. 2 years down the line and approx. 20,000 miles later the car has failed it's MOT AGAIN on emissions. I took it to Peugeot who confirmed it's the cat that needs replacing, to get from them will cost £750!! It originally cost me £250! I rang the garage that originally fitted it just to find out what warranty they offer and it's only 12 months. I have not told them about the actual problem yet until I know my rights as they will probably tell me theres nothing they can do. Surely even after warranty a product should still last a bit longer? Can anyone help. My deadline for MOT re-test is today!

1, you have left it a bit late
2, EU law says you have 2 years warranty
3, what are the emissions figures now, what were the emissions at the 1 year MOT?, was the O2 sensor etc working correctly then?
4. have there been any engine faults (warning lights) since.
You need to be sure that the emissions are caused by the cat or the O2 sensor as there is a big difference in price.
Go to original garage, ask then to fix it free or you will go to Peugeot, pay the extra and sue them for the costs.
