Go Green with Copper Gutters and Roofs
Today more than ever, owners are influenced by the need to go green when building new homes or replacing parts of existing buildings. Renewable and recycled building materials are more popular than ever before. And these materials are becoming cheaper. Copper gutters and roofs offer a green alternative to more conventional materials.
Copper gutters remain quite uncommon here in the UK, despite their overwhelming popularity in continental Europe. Because the production process for plastic gutters is environmentally damaging, they offer and excellent alternative. Producing plastic gutters is damaging on two levels: initial production produces harmful emissions and the short life of plastic gutters requires the process to repeated a lot. Sourcing the copper to make gutters is so green that the material is actually classed as renewable. This is due to the fact that only around ten per cent of the world’s copper supplies has been mined. Even better, most architectural copper has already been recycled. Therefore producing copper gutters causes only minimal damage to the environment and reduces subsequent production. This is because copper gutters will be working perfectly in over one hundred years.
Copper gutters also offer the advantage that, thanks to their natural fungicidal qualities, blockages happen less often. It is also a mild disinfectant, making harvested water safer.
Aesthetically, too copper is a fantastic choice. Gutters and roofs are attractive thanks to the colour changes brought about by the oxidisation process.
The advantages of copper roofs are the same as with the gutters. The longevity of copper makes for a great financial investement.
The initial cost of buying copper is more than for some other materials, but it offers better value for money in the long run. The long term savings combined with doing practically no environmental damage can only be a good thing.
